Stephen (Steve) Smith

Stephen (Steve) Smith, 85, beloved Father, Grandfather, Great grandfather, and Brother, was called to his eternal resting place on February 9, 2024. He entered this world on February 13, 1938, in Winfield, Kansas, born to John J. Smith and Helen V Baker Smith.

Mass of Christian burial will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 17, 2024, in the St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Father Carson Krittenbrink officiating. The Rosary will be Friday evening, February 16, 2024 at 6:00 p.m. in the St. Francis of Assisi catholic Church. Visitation will be, Friday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Miller Stahl Funeral Home of Newkirk, OK.

Stephen graduated from Newkirk High in 1956. Upon graduation he decided to serve his country in the United States Navy. He met the love of his life, Linda Randolph and they were married June 11, 1962, in the St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Newkirk. They made their home in California where Stephen was stationed with the U.S. Navy, he was honorably discharged in 1967 and they moved to Newkirk, OK. He worked with his parents running Smith and Sons Oil Company and full-service gas station, and later they purchased The Hut, a very popular Newkirk Drive in, and later they built the new Hut. Over time they operated the Dairy Cream, Smith and Sons oil company #2, a movie rental store and T shirt shop, Stephen was employed by Newkirk Public Schools for many years where he was a custodian and bus driver, he was deeply compassionate about Newkirk Schools, his co-workers and the students.  Stephen was a member of the St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He also served on the Newkirk School Board for several years. In his spare time, he enjoyed watching old Westerns, and as he would say,” I'm going to check the perimeters”, which means I'm going for a ride around town.

Those left behind to cherish his memory are his children; David Smith and wife Angie of Arkansas, Lori Mayden and husband James of Newkirk, OK, Stephanie Smith-Froese and husband Ron of Penrose, Colo. Michael Smith and wife Marcie of Newkirk, OK , and Brendon Smith and wife Meagan of Colorado Springs, Colo. Siblings; Jim Smith and wife Sherie of Stillwater, OK, Marge Harvey-Jones and husband Mike of Hot Springs, AR, Kathy Simmons and husband, William of Indian Wells, CA, Paul Smith of Oxnard, CA and Peter Smith of Laguna Niguel, CA, Grandchildren; Erica Katwaru and husband, Mike, Stephen Thomas and wife Rachel, Michael Turner, Andrew Mayden, Briana Froese, Kilian Smith, Luna Smith, Danyelle Smith, Mattea Smith, Shondalley Smith, and Haley Smith, Great Grandchildren, Kalina Kaykhah, Lilyana Kaykhah, Jace Thomas, Devi Katwaru, Bonus grandchildren; Alicia Thompson, Meaghan Thompson, and Hailey Stone. Also, surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.

Stephen was preceded in death by his parents, Wife, Linda, and two brothers, Charles Anthony Smith, and Michael J. Smith.
